Last updated: Summer Patch 2017 (WIP to update to march 2018)
Basic Combat:
King difficulty and below:
First ~70 turns: 3 melee units and 3 archers = one city. Use battering rams when they have walls.
Make sure to not waste any production. Try and get about 4 cities in this phase, and get a few horses.
After the first 70 turns your troops become obsolete, so work on infrastructure for a bit, and settle about 2 cities.
Starting from about turn ~110 to about turn ~155 you want to make an army of ~4 knights and some crossbowman. Mostly use the crossbowmen to pick off enemy troops, then use the knights to destroy the city.
Battering Rams > siege towers
When it is about turn ~160, make about ~4 field cannons.
Start building bombards (like 2) and musketmen when you can. Use bombards and field cannons to destroy the walls before going for the kill.
Around turn ~190 you want to start building a few infantry. Make a few knight and field cannon corps. Make an observation balloon to help out the bombards.
Around turn ~210 upgrade the bombards to artillery
Around ~220 building biplanes is an option. Also start to upgrade the knights into tanks.
Turn ~250 war should consist of a few infantry and tanks, and a bunch of artillery and field cannons.
Later in the game, around turn 275 to turn 300, get mechanized infantry, rocket artillery, modern armor, etc. use nukes and planes and all of that good stuff, and if you were doing well in the early game, you should be able to stomp here in the late game. Try and focus down the leaders, such as in culture and religion, so they can’t win.
Make sure to try and preserve the amount of promotions you have. When making a corp, always put a level 0 troop with a high level troop, this way you don’t waste experience. When you get a promotion, spend it ASAP, because you can’t earn experience if you still have a promotion to use.
It is a good idea to try and get level 4 knights when you start off, so your tanks will be able to throw multiple attacks at an enemy, which is very deadly.
How to have an easy Civ game every time:
Most of the time trying out that strategy on Emperor will not work, and it won't work in Deity and Immortal, where the AI can produce a shit ton of troops.
The best way to take a city early game is to grab a civ with a powerful early unique unit, or you could just build up a bunch of troops and just plow them over, because as of the 2017 summer patch, the AI still sorta suck at combat.
You could probably build a settler around turn 35 after you have dealt with Barb camps around you. (and if there are no warmongering civs near you) (after the settler you can build/buy a builder), and then a monument or something.
In the new city you should start off with a monument.
In the early game combat, you really need about 4 melee units before stacking up on as many archers as you can. The archers will mostly beat down the enemy civ's troops while your melee units surround a city.
Make sure that once you engage in a war, you do not stop producing units, as you will most likely lose several units to the AI.
After the 70 turns, if you are still in the mood for combat you can train up a shit ton of horsemen and swordsmen, these will destroy the AI pretty effectively.
A major factor that prevents you from steamrolling everything you see is that you will run out of gold to upgrade your units. If you are running low on gold, just upgrade as many as you think you can and then trash all of the other obsolete units.
Once you unlock the knights, upgrade your horsemen, grab some crossbowmen, grab a battering ram or something, then run over some more AI. By this time, if everything is going well you should be able to have taken over most of your continent, it is OK if you haven't though.
Once your army becomes obsolete around turn 150, take a break until you get bombards and field cannons.
These things will destroy everything. You can easily destroy the walls of a city with the bombards before obliterating it with your melee troops.
If there are still people left on your continent, make sure to get a few artillery up as soon as possible. You should focus on getting infantry and upgrading your knights into tanks.
After you have conquered every soul on your continent, spam on your infrastructure. Make sure to have a campus and a commercial hub in every city. Industrial zones are also very important late game. These buildings will yet you stock up on a HUGE science lead, and you will easily get the power to build Nuclear missiles to destroy other civilizations if they annoy you too much. (To help see who you must destroy in your world domination, you should build up a spaceport, then launch a satellite, this will tell you where everyone is).
It should be easy enough to build up a city to around 60+ production per turn.
TBH if you made it so far, it should be pretty easy to close the game out. (Just set all of your cities to building thermo nukes, grab an nuclear submarine, and then lay waste to the entire world :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Slightly more advanced guide for war
The most important tech to proritize right off the bat is writing, as this will allow you to build a campus. Next, you must get the Eureka bonus for archery.
Get up Masonry so you can build a battering ram.
Unlock encampments so you can get a great general. Great generals are great for the extra bonus they can give you.
Once you've unlocked a government, you can go for the warmongering one most of the time. Make sure to build up a government plaza and build up the warmongering upgrade for it to unlock the policy giving more combat strength.
The most important part in declaring a war is having the required amount of units beforehand. This is much easier when you have a unique unit that gains a lot of bonus attack for free.
A good army size is 3 warriors and 5 archers. With the proper chopping in your capital, you can probably get this out in like 4 turns maybe.
However, you may want to bide your time and wait for more troops to come up, and then spam a bunch of those out, and then rape everyone with your unique unit.
Getting up a few units with a ton of movement points like horses is really good because it is very easy to surround a city. They also typically have a ton of combat strength, so it is easy to destroy any walls the AI might build.
It can be pretty dang challenging to conquer an AI if they build a ton of units. If they have a lot of units your one option, most of the time, is to pump out as many archers as possible. Use them to snipe up all the warriors and stuff, and you should be able to overwelm them. Just make sure to abuse all of the combat bonuses you can get.
Jeff's Tips:
Tips for going for a science victory:
The easiest way to snowball out of control is to start off with lots of domination on a continents map. This lets you snowball a huge lead. The more cities that you have, the more campuses and commercial hubs you can build. Of course, it is possible to win as a pacifist, but building cities is always harder than taking them from the AI.
You should try to take over your continent/as many civs as you can before midgame. People start meeting each other after mid-game across continents, and you don't want to announce to everyone that you are a warmongerer. :)
(For tips for domination, then just read my guide below).
Building the space mission parts are very challenging however, for example building the space launcher will take a very long time to do.
To shorten this, build as many harbors and commercial districts as you can, and then put 10-20+ traders in a high production city. It should be easy to get over 75 production, and it is possible to get 100 production per turn at a single time.
Then, later once you have collected a lot of great people to help for a science victory (read below), winning is a breeze.
One of the largest threats to a science victory is another civ getting a science victory. Always pay attention to the victory screen. Once you see other civs building spaceports and stuff, you can send your spys to their cities to sabotage the building. This will slow them down a little. (The best way to stop an AI is to nuke all of their cities, but by the time that you gain so many nukes, you will probably already have had plenty of time to build your own spaceship to Mars).
Great people are the best help to win a science victory. There is a list below of the top great people you want. There are a lot of great scientists that give trash boosts, that you should pass. Even if you have a lot of great scientist points every turn, you must remember that the AI will slowely get one every once a while, and you could lose a scientist because of this.
To finish all of the technologies before everyone else, you should aim for about 300-450 science per turn. In every city try to build a campus, even though this may hurt your economy. To create more districts in a city just put some trade routes in it, or chop rainforest/clear swamps and stuff. You should try to build a research lab in every single city, but you should probably spend your hammers on something else once you have unlocked the Spaceport, as it will always take a lot of turns to complete.
Great People to look out for are:
Great Scientists: (There are a lot of good scientists, but these will give the largest boosts, and are the most important)
Albert Einstein: Makes all universities provide 4 extra science.
Hypatia: Builds a library, and all libriaries get 1 more science
Isaac Newton: Builds a university and a library, universities get 1 more science.
Carl Sagan: 3000 hammers towards space race projects.
Great Engineers:
Stephanie Kwolek: 100% extra production towards space race projects. Very strong.
Wernher von Braun: 100% extra production towards space race projects.
Robert Goddard: 20% production towards space race projects.
Sergei Korolev: Grants 1500 hammers towards space race projects.
These are not the only great engineers to look out for, always get a great engineer if it gives you amenities.
Wonders:
The Ruhr Valley wonder gives 20% production. Building this before you work on a spaceport will help. (To build this, build a factory next to a river, then build the Ruhr Valley next to it on the river). (also have a powerplant and a seaport for that production)
For policies, getting "The Enlightenment" will give a policy that gives 100% science from campus buildings.
Make sure to use a wildcard slot for great scientist points.
"Class Struggle" unlocks "Collectivization", which gives 4 food for each domestic trade route. This will buff up a city, allowing more population and production.
Tips for going for a domination victory:
The goal of this victory type is to own all of the other civilization's capitals. Obviously in doing so you will have to declare war on everyone else, therefore diplomacy will not really be utilized.
Any Civilization can go for a domination victory, however civs with powerful early Unique Units are the best, as they will help you take over some early civs. Civs on Emperor and higher have the ability to produce a TON of troops early on, ESPECIALLY the warmongering civs. If you take someone over, you can snowball a technology lead, allowing to overpower the other civs with "ease".
Having a good map selection plays a large roll in this victory option. Go for pangaea, even though it is possible to win with any loadout. On maps with a lot of water, winning is more difficult, as there are so many movement between you and the other continent. Training up a gigantic naval army is also fine if you can take a seaside cities. This will give you a grip on the other continents.
Having a very close nearby civ will make a domination victory much easier, especially in the higher difficulties. At first, you want to train up an army of 3 warriors, and then ~3 slingers that you will upgrade into archers. Try to catch the enemy civ's army out. Very high difficulty AI loves to declare war on the player. Luckily, you can turn their war against them, as it is easier to fight the AI if their troops are further away from their city.
If you cannot wipe out a civ before they get walls, (this is possible, for example if they are a warmongering AI they will already have a lot of troops that can be very hard to get through) just restart the game and try again :p
Combat is much harder when the other civs build walls, as you need to destroy the walls before you can deal damage with your melee troops. The walls can bombard your own units. If you combine that with enemy archers, you units will be constantly weakened.
To deal with Archers, cavalry units are your best friend, cause they have 5 movement and can stomp a ranged unit from far away.
To deal with walls, you can get ~5 ranged units or a few bombards to destroy the walls, before having your melee units take the city. Or, you can use a battering ram and just use your melee troops to stomp the city.
No matter how you siege a city, you will end up taking damage with your troops. You should have a few substitute units to take over if one unit gets hurt.
Depending on the Civ that you are fighting, it is possible to get a lot of cities from a peace deal. To do this, you have to reduce their army to like zero, and then you have to take a city or 2. After recieving your free cities, you can wipe them out very easily later, as you should have a gigantic tech lead over them.
For more aggressive civs that won't give you any cities, it is still good to peace out for a bit every once a while. If you managed to take a few cities, you will have destroyed their science, and you should be able to wipe them out easily later.
As you go on, it should be easier to wipe out each AI, as you will have the tech advantage over them from having so many cities. A strong economy will help a lot when progressing, as you will be able to constantly upgrade troops.
Domination victories are the easiest atm, so not that much more is to be said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tips for going for a religious victory:
Religious victories are much harder on Deity difficulty.
Having a domination start can help, but you should spend most of your time rushing a holy site down for the great prophet. They key here is to just get as much faith as you can. Religious combat is where things get tricky, but it is still doable. You just need to have your apostles in a large group, while using the terrain to your advantage.
There are many religion builds. If you are not going for a religious victory, you should pick God of the Forge for the extra production.
For Russia or Japan, you should go:
Pantheon: Divine Spark
Core Belief: Jesuit Education
Beliefs: Scripture
Reforms: Mosque
Other Reforms: Pilgrimage, Papal Primacy, Tithe (depending on how you are feeling)
For Arabia or India, you should go:
Pantheon: Stone circles if you can get +4 faith per turn.
Desert Folklore if you spawned next to a bunch of desert.
Core Belief: Jesuit Education or Religious Community
Beliefs: Pagoda, Meeting house, Wat
Reforms: Crusade, Papal Primacy
For Spain (warmongering), you should go
Pantheon: Stone Circles, or any Faith generation
Core Belief: Zen Meditation
Beliefs: Papal Primacy or Meeting house
Reforms: Crusade.
To win a religious victory you just need to convert as many cities to your religion as you can. Other religious units can attack yours, which is what makes this type of victory so challenging.
To start off a religious victory, you want to obtain a holy site as soon as you can, so you can get great people points towards a great prophet. Stonehenge is a good wonder to build, except it is extremely hard to build it on King and above.
Tips for going for a culture victory:
Culture victories also often start off with a warmongering start, just like a science victory might.
Building lots of theater districts will generate the most culture, producing the most tourism.
Ideally when going for a culture victory, you should have around 15 cities. Every City should have an Amphitheater, Archaeological Museum, and a Broadcast center. Also you need many boosters to your culture (lots listed below)
Archaeological museum > art museum
